Going Wild

Wildlife photography presents some unique challenges. Not only are you having to work with natural light, which is a special skill in itself, but you are also working with subjects who aren't the least bit interested in cooperating with a photographer. Getting the shots you want takes patience and adaptability. Here you will find course and photo shoot opportunities to help you hone your skill at capturing stunning wildlife images.

Next course starts:

TBA

Seats available: 12

Location:

 Amherst, NH

No matter where you are, if you step outside and stand still for a minute, you're almost sure to find some wildlife. From the smallest beetle to creatures big enough to strike awe in our hearts, non-human subjects are all around. (Even in NH, you might find the occasional bear or moose - although you're more likely to stumble across a chipmunk.) Photographing wildlife takes some special skills, some adaptability, some creativity, and a healthy dose of patience. In our 7-week Wildlife Photography course, we'll explore the art of animal art, including a field trip to Roger Williams Zoo to put your skills to the test.

The first part of our Wildlife Photography course will include brief reviews of the basics of camera-slinging and the aspects of photo composition that pertain to wildlife photography. We'll also go on a class field trip to the Roger Williams Zoo, where you'll have the opportunity to practice your new skills in a live situation.

And then, hang onto your hat: the course will take an intermission, during which we will journey Into Africa for the ultimate wildlife photography photo safari. The trip is optional, of course. Should you choose to travel with us, though, your skills should be up to the task.

After the trip, our Wildlife Photography course will pick back up at home, and we'll focus on editing and printing our stunning wildlife images. (If you were not part of the Into Africa adventure, no worries - your images from Roger Williams Zoo will do nicely.)

Included with the course are all the notes you may need to take. We already have that done for you. You will get a well-organized book with notes and information for each photography class.

This course runs only once a year, and it's possible that it may only be a one-time offering. So, if you'd like to learn to photograph the beauty of the great outdoors from us, the time to act is now.

We will spend 8 days exploring the sights of Botswana and Zimbabwe, seeking out the majestic animals that call this place home - and, of course, taking gorgeous photographs of it all. We will include the incredible Victoria Falls and make an opportunity to photograph the Milky Way. Being in the southern hemisphere will give us a clearer view of this wonder than we might be used to.

The images on this page are provided courtesy of Pangolin Photo Safaris, our partners in this undertaking. They are working with us to tailor a trip that will allow our students to maximize their time and make the most of any opportunities for dramatic images. And when I say that they've thought of everything, I really mean it.

Meals and drinks at lodgings throughout the trip are included. At both the Pangolin Chobe Hotel and the Pangolin Delta Photo Camp, editing facilities provide a dedicated space for photo review and tweaking. Most importantly, Pangolin Photo Safaris maintains a fleet of vehicles that are designed with photographers in mind. There are no bad seats. No point at which you'll need to lean over someone else to get your shot. If you've ever tried to take photos of any animal, be it the family pet, the bear in your backyard, or a songbird in a local marsh, you know how easy it is to miss a shot if you're not ready to go at a moment's notice. The good people at Pangolin Photo Safaris know it, too. In their Photo Boat, each seat offers a dedicated gimbal, meaning you can keep your camera at the ready at all times without having to hold it up for the entire tour. Their overland game viewers have been equipped with adjustable height bean bag mounts for the same reason. (They will even provide cameras, lenses, and memory cards, should you find yourself lacking. They want to help you capture stunning images, and they bend over backwards to prove it.)

Because Pangolin Photo Safaris does nothing but this, you can rest assured that we'll be in good hands. They pay attention to every detail, including adjusting itineraries to account for seasonal variation and the movement and activities of area wildlife. If you've ever been to a zoo or game preserve and wished for photos without bars or glass between you and the creature you're trying to capture, this is the trip for you. If you've ever looked up at the night sky and wished light pollution didn't mar your view of the heavens, this is the trip for you. If you have a longing for adventure and a desire to see wildlife that doesn't naturally live anywhere else in the world - this is the trip for you.

For all the details, including a rough itinerary, visit the Into Africa page, and get your name on the list today!

Right now we are still in the planning phase for this trip and everything is still soft. We will shortly announce a date for the huddle, where we can get together and talk about the details in order to nail them down.

If you want to make sure that you get invited to the Africa huddle, please share your email with us here:
